Working with Vulnerable Children - Trauma Informed, Invested and Responsive Practice Within Education
Over three sessions (two online and one face-to-face) Bowden House invite you to join them in thinking about the role of trauma across all aspects of development, using brain science and compassion to understand and address children's emotional and behavioural challenges.
Session 1 – Wednesday 12 January 2022 - 4:00pm - 5:15pm
An introduction to the organisational climate and the prevalence and multi-layered nature of trauma. They will demonstrate why we need to make sense of children’s behavioural challenges in the context of adversity and trauma in order for them to progress and fulfil their potential, in education and beyond it. They invite you to consider the roles of power and difference and to recognise ‘problems’ as adaptive strategies and responses to an environment that can feel threatening and unsafe.
Session 2 – Thursday 20 January 2022 - Full day
Bowden House School Visit (On site)
A visit to Bowden House where they are working to cultivate a climate of trust, safety and relational security amongst staff and students. Here they will share some of the tensions between therapeutic and educational models and the endeavour to be trauma reducing rather than trauma inducing.
Session 3 – Wednesday 2 February 2022 - 4:00pm - 5:15pm
Exploring and embedding trauma sensitive policies and practices (Online)
Sharing ways of working to create a culture of curiosity utilising reflective practice and the removal of blame. Consideration will be given to themes of mirroring, parallel and unconscious processes and the ways in which these can disrupt even the best of intentions. This is linked to the power of language, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma.
